The cause was structural rather than linguistic: the store validated the payment and wrote the order inside the same synchronous request, so a slow gateway response held the customer, the web worker and a database connection open together, and under a promotion the connection pool drained and the whole checkout queued behind it. The fix moved payment confirmation and order fulfilment onto queue workers with idempotent handlers keyed on the gateway transaction id, kept the customer-facing request to a fast “payment received” acknowledgement, and added a reconciliation job for the small number of payments that confirmed but failed to write an order. The next sale went through without the checkout falling over.
The feed-sync job that oversold every weekend. A Poznan seller syndicating a catalogue of several thousand products to a large marketplace kept overselling stock on busy weekends, then cancelling orders and taking the reputational hit. The overselling stopped, and the cancellations that had been eroding the seller’s marketplace rating went with it.
The DACH B2B portal on an end-of-life runtime. A German wholesale client, drawn to Poznan precisely because it is the nearest large Polish hub to their offices and sits in the same time zone, ran an order portal for their trade customers on PHP 7.1 with a hand-rolled framework and manual includes, and their host had given notice the runtime would be dropped.
