PHP still runs a large share of the web, and most of it is written by people who touch the language occasionally between other work. Tests are the third leg: not an aspiration to one hundred per cent coverage, but PHPUnit tests around the parts that carry business and financial risk, plus characterization tests when working inside a legacy system where the existing behavior is the specification. Laravel suits product teams that want velocity with strong conventions. Its ecosystem is deep, queues, Eloquent, Blade, Horizon and the rest are batteries included, and a small team ships a lot of application quickly. The cost is that Laravel’s conventions pull you toward its way of doing things, which is a feature until the domain fights it. Symfony suits systems that need long-term structure and reusable, decoupled components, and it dominates the DACH-facing work that flows through Wrocław. German and Austrian clients tend to buy engineering for a decade, not a quarter, and a strict architecture with real testability is what they ask for, which is exactly Symfony’s home ground. Its learning curve is steeper and its ceremony higher, and that ceremony is precisely what pays off on a system that will live for ten years. Plain PHP still wins more often than framework enthusiasts admit: a webhook handler, a single integration endpoint, a WordPress plugin, a command-line tool. Loading a full framework to answer one HTTP request is a dependency graph you will maintain forever for no benefit. The engineering judgment is matching the tool to the problem, and being willing to say that the exciting framework is the wrong one here.
#Legacy PHP rescue and PHP 8.x modernization
A large slice of real PHP work is not greenfield. It is an application that has been earning money for years and has become dangerous to change: an abandoned framework version, a PHP runtime that is end-of-life, dependencies that no longer receive updates, and no tests to catch a regression. Wrocław produces more than its share of these, because the city has been building software long enough that plenty of internal tools written during the outsourcing and R&D boom of the 2000s are still in production behind a corporate firewall. The instinct to rewrite them from scratch is almost always wrong, because the rewrite competes with the working system, runs over, and leaves you maintaining two things at once.

#WooCommerce and WordPress as PHP applications
There is a habit of treating WordPress as a separate, lesser world from real PHP, and it is a mistake. WordPress and WooCommerce are large PHP applications running on PHP and MySQL, and serious work on them is backend engineering, not page building. A custom plugin with a designed data model, custom post types that outlive the current theme, REST endpoints, background jobs run through a real queue rather than the unreliable WordPress pseudo-cron, and integrations with external systems are all straightforward PHP problems dressed in WordPress clothes.
The value a PHP developer brings here is exactly the engineering discipline the plugin-installer market lacks. A WooCommerce store with thirty active plugins and a checkout that takes most of a second to respond is a performance problem with a database underneath it: uncached queries, an autoloaded options table swollen into megabytes, and meta queries with no index behind them. Most PHP applications do not live alone. They talk to a payment gateway, an ERP, a courier, a CRM, and the quality of that integration layer decides whether the system is trustworthy. #Three Wrocław engagements from the workbench

The live-ops companion backend that could not keep up with a season. A Wrocław studio in the mould the city’s gamedev scene produces ran a PHP web backend beside its game: player accounts, a cosmetics store, and a config service that pushed seasonal event and battle-pass definitions to clients. When a new season went live the config service was read on every session start, and a synchronous call out to the platform store to validate each player’s entitlements sat directly in that path, so a slow store response stalled account logins across the board. The fix separated the two concerns. Season and pass definitions moved behind a cache with an explicit versioned invalidation, so a config read no longer touched the database on the hot path. Entitlement validation moved onto queue workers with idempotent handlers keyed on the store’s transaction id, backed by a reconciliation job that re-granted anything the asynchronous path missed. The next season opened without the login stall, and the store stopped generating “paid but did not receive” tickets.
The DACH manufacturer’s dealer portal on a two-major-version-old Symfony. A German mechanical-engineering firm supplying spare parts across the region ran a dealer portal in Symfony that had drifted two major versions behind while the internal team focused elsewhere. Dealers logged in to check availability and place parts orders, and the portal synchronized stock and pricing with the manufacturer’s SAP back office. The synchronization had grown fragile: a nightly batch that silently dropped rows when SAP timed out, leaving dealers looking at stale availability. Because the client sold on precision, that was a reputational problem, not just a technical one. We stood the environment up reproducibly in Docker, added PHPStan to reconstruct the type contracts the drift had eroded, and wrote tests around the pricing and availability logic before touching the framework. The Symfony upgrade then proceeded one bundle at a time, and the SAP sync was rebuilt on Symfony Messenger with idempotent, retryable jobs and a reconciliation report the client could read each morning. The whole engagement ran in German and English on CET, which was half the reason they chose a Wrocław team.
The R&D centre’s internal tool stuck on an end-of-life runtime. A corporate research-and-development centre in Wrocław, the kind that grew out of the city’s Nokia and IBM engineering presence, ran an internal data and reporting tool on PHP 7.1 with a hand-rolled framework and manual includes. Their platform team had given notice that the shared runtime would be dropped, and every attempted upgrade had failed because a handful of report calculations relied on PHP’s old loose type coercion and nobody could tell which. #When you do not need a dedicated PHP developer
The section most agency pages leave out. If your project is a brochure site, a standard store with no custom logic, or a marketing page, off-the-shelf tools and a competent configurator will serve you, and hiring a dedicated PHP developer is money spent on capability you will never use. A good developer will point you there rather than invent a build, because the alternative, a bespoke application that nobody funds the upkeep for, is worse than the standard tool it replaced. Custom code is a commitment, and an orphaned PHP application that only its author understood is a liability, not an asset.
